A closer look at some of our favorite transformations.

This Willow Creek homeowner wanted to turn an underused backyard slope into a multi-season outdoor living space. We terraced the grade with a segmental retaining wall, installed a 600 sq ft bluestone patio at the upper level, and built a custom cedar pergola for shade. The lower level features a gas fire pit surrounded by built-in bench seating, and a compact outdoor kitchen with a built-in grill, sink, and granite counter. New planting beds with ornamental grasses and perennials soften the hardscape and provide seasonal color. Integrated low-voltage lighting makes the space usable well into the evening.

The Maplewood home had great bones but a tired, overgrown front yard that dated the property. We removed the aging shrubs and overgrown yews, installed a new paver walkway with a gentle curve to the front door, and designed a layered foundation planting with dwarf evergreens, flowering shrubs, and a mix of perennials for three-season interest. A new sod lawn and defined bed edges pulled everything together. The transformation took the home's curb appeal from neglected to showpiece in three weeks.

A steep side yard made this Ridgewood property feel smaller than it was—and erosion was threatening the foundation. We designed and built a 120-foot segmental retaining wall that created two usable flat terraces where there had been an unusable slope. The wall includes integrated LED step lighting, two sets of wide flagstone steps, and planting pockets for cascading perennials that soften the stone. The upper terrace was graded and sodded to create a flat play area, and a French drain behind the wall handles groundwater. The wall was engineered for the 42-inch frost depth required in our region.
